The Story

In a dilapidated row house in North Philadelphia, two orphaned brothers, Phillip and Treat, navigate a life marked by abandonment and loss. Phillip, sensitive and reclusive, never leaves their home, while Treat, a violent pickpocket, struggles with his role as protector. Their world is one of illiteracy, loneliness, and a desperate need for connection. Everything changes when Treat kidnaps a wealthy businessman who, in a twist of fate, becomes their unexpected mentor and father figure. This mysterious man, an orphan himself, brings humor, fear, and hope into their lives, transforming their bleak existence into a poignant journey of healing and redemption.

NY Times described Orphans as theater for the senses and emotions. Steppenwolf Theater's 1985 production, directed by Gary Sinese, first in Chicago, and then off-broadway, cemented its status as a darkly comic drama--a shrewd pastiche that grows steadily in passion and tension. A 2013 Broadway revival starring Alec Baldwin furthered its renown. Now, Parker Players Theater Co. takes its turn in presenting this play which, at its heart, is about fathers and sons searching each other out — creating these roles for themselves, if they must — because neither can survive without the other.
